The Story of Us (Taylor Swift)

I used to think one day we'd tell the story of us
How we met and the sparks flew instantly
People would say, "they're the lucky ones"

Camp has got to be one of the most memorable events in uni. You do crazy things together, you lack sleep together, you support each other with whatever strength you have left from the activities, and you meet new people whom you may otherwise never talk to...

I used to know my place was a spot next to you
Now I'm searching the room for an empty seat

In camp you are always, ALWAYS paired up with people from the opposite sex. For freshies who rarely even talk to people who aren't from the same sex, it's definitely a new experience. Especially when both of them are evergreen, and inexperienced in how to communicate with people they won't even dare to talk to. You end up holding hands, walking around together blindfolded for activities, and even awkwardly getting tekan-ed by seniors.

After all that you go through, you wind up talking to each other often. You bring your phone around everywhere, you exceed the SMS limit but continue, you text each other through lessons, while studying, and even during friend outings with pictures of your food, looking at your phone incessantly for entertainment.

But you don't meet up in real life, you don't talk to each other. It was bound to come a day when you stopped talking completely.

'Cause lately I don't even know what page you're on

You asked for lunch, and then decided to change your mind. You treat so many people in such a nonchalant or mean manner that it should have been a sign. But why didn't she realise it earlier?

Oh, a simple complication,

She wasn't the only one who liked you. And you knew, it was too obvious not to realise. But you didn't make things clear, nor did you do anything to settle the issue.

Miscommunications lead to fall out

It's just not possible to measure what you give out and expect people to "repay" you for it. Add on the fieriness of both your characters, how can anyone say they didn't see this coming? Somehow or another, you still continued as usual, but with more reservation.

So many things that I wish you knew
So many walls up I can't break through

Repeatedly being cruel to someone else, you were. It became the last straw. This time, she was determined.

Now I'm standing alone In a crowded room

Every event, every time you meet again. You notice her standing there, still incessantly looking at her phone. But this time, it's not to you.

And we're not speaking and I'm dying to know
Is it killing you like it's killing me yeah

The next time you sat down together out of necessity, no one else at the table around knew anything about what had happened. Instead, it was the normal chatter, and you acted as though you were you again. You never talked directly throughout, and never looked at each other in the eye.

I don't know what to say since the twist of fate
When it all broke down and the story of us
Looks a lot like a tragedy now. Next chapter

Or maybe it was never meant to happen. You were never meant to be together.

How'd we end up this way?

When they say opposites attract, they didn't mean two very stubborn people with very contrasting views.

See me nervously pulling at my clothes
And trying to look busy

Her phone will always be her focus when you see her. And no matter how engrossed she is, she can't concentrate.

And you're doing your best to avoid me

You continue to talk to your friends, to show off to other people. And just as nobody knows, nothing would have seemed like it happened.

I'm starting to think one day I'll tell the story of us
How I was losing my mind when I saw you here
But you held your pride like you should have held me

Maybe, just maybe, this story will remain a secret forever in your hearts.

Oh, I'm scared to see the ending

After a year and a half of a rollercoaster ride, it finally goes back down and you both are reluctant to get off.

Why are we pretending this is nothing?

You may act like it didn't matter, but if she was ever right about anything, it was that you were trying hard at first. It was just missed opportunities and lack of understanding from two yet-to-mature people.

I'd tell you I miss you but I don't know how
I've never heard silence quite this loud

It's been almost a few months since a normal conversation has occurred. She stops checking if you're still paying attention, but removes your contact from the nickname.

Now I'm standing alone in a crowded room
And we're not speaking and I'm dying to know
Is it killing you like it's killing me yeah
I don't know what to say since the twist of fate
When it all broke down and the story of us
Looks a lot like a tragedy now

This is looking like a contest
Of who can act like they care less

You're winning. Just don't rub in the fact. She's still nursing the hurt without anyone knowing. The common friends continue to be oblivious, and the other people don't even acknowledge an existential friendship.

But I liked it better when you were on my side
The battle's in your hands now
But I would lay my armor down
If you'd say you'd rather love than fight
So many things that you wish I knew
But the story of us might be ending soon

It may not have been the best journey, but it was definitely a story to keep. You can continue with your own lives, never stopping to nod to each other in the corridors, never making eye contact, but you can never completely remove these memories etched in the youthful, angsty, impressionable minds of the two people involved.

Now I'm standing alone in a crowded room
And we're not speaking and I'm dying to know
Is it killing you like it's killing me yeah
I don't know what to say since the twist of fate
When it all broke down and the story of us
Looks a lot like a tragedy now, the end

It's March yet again. The Script is coming to SG. I'm sure it'll be enjoyable.
